The opening ceremony of the 2026 China Xizang Trans-Himalaya International Cycling Race was held at Potala Palace Square in Lhasa, Xizang autonomous region, on Aug 1, marking the start of a six-day competition across the plateau.

The race features five stages with a total distance of about 570.68 kilometers, covering Nyingchi, Lhasa, Lhokha, and Shigatse.

The event, launched in 2018, was upgraded to a Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Men's Elite 2.1 race in 2025 and has become an important platform for sports exchanges and sports tourism development in Xizang.

This year's race has attracted 18 teams, including 10 from overseas and eight from China. More than 120 riders are registered, with three UCI professional teams joining the competition.

The route passes through some of Xizang's most iconic landscapes and cultural sites, with sections along national highways 318 and 349. The race includes newly designed sections in Nyingchi and Lhokha, combining high-altitude cycling challenges with the region's natural and cultural features.

Organizers have also introduced a full jersey system, including red, white, green, and yellow, in line with international cycling standards.

The event seeks to promote greater integration of sports, culture, and tourism, while allowing riders and visitors to experience Xizang's diverse landscapes and rich culture through cycling.
