Six Tibetan opera troupes are staging performances from Aug 12 to 16 at Zongjiao Lukang Park in Lhasa, Xizang autonomous region, as part of the Shoton Festival celebrations, drawing local residents and visitors to enjoy the traditional art form.

The Shoton Festival, also known as the Yogurt Festival, was among the first to be inscribed on China's national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2006. During the celebration, participants enjoy yogurt, gather for picnics, and attend traditional events such as Tibetan opera and horse racing.

Combining singing, dancing, theatrical performance, storytelling, and literature, Tibetan opera has a history of more than 600 years. It was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
