The city of Lhasa recorded robust economic growth in the first quarter of 2025, with the gross domestic product hitting 31.27 billion yuan ($4.29 billion).
That accounted for 43.6 percent of the GDP of Xizang autonomous region.
The performance by the capital of the autonomous region represented a 7.6 percent year-on-year increase at comparable prices, underscoring Lhasa's role as a regional economic powerhouse.
Industrial output led with an 18.2 percent year-on-year rise in the added value of above-designated-size enterprises. Investment in fixed assets surged 30.9 percent, particularly in secondary industries, which saw a hefty 52.5 percent increase.
Lhasa's consumer market also flourished, as retail sales of consumer goods grew by 11.6 percent year-on-year to 12.56 billion yuan, with revenue from the catering sector showing stronger growth than retail goods.
The city's economic structure displayed clear signs of optimization and upgrading. The secondary industry emerged as a significant growth driver, achieving a growth rate of 10.5 percent and contributing an added value of 12.74 billion yuan.
Meanwhile, the tertiary sector maintained its dominance, with an added value of 18.21 billion yuan — representing nearly 60 percent of Lhasa's GDP.
Agricultural modernization further bolstered growth, with the agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fisheries sector growing 14.1 percent.
Additionally, new economic drivers gained momentum. Investment in high-tech industries rose by 65 percent, while the added value from the digital economy's core industries increased by 23 percent year-on-year.
Finally, green energy projects made up over 40 percent of total investments, highlighting a commitment to sustainable development.
