Lhasa to stage inaugural cultural tourism festival

The city of Lhasa will host its first-ever Snowy Ancient City, Sacred Lhasa Cultural Tourism Festival on May 17-19.

According to an announcement by the city on April 28, the festival aims to show Lhasa's rich cultural and tourism resources and elevate its profile as an international destination.

On the evening of May 17, a special gala performance will set the stage for all the fun to come, followed the next morning by the opening ceremony of the festival and the 2025 Lhasa Cultural Tourism Industry Development Conference.

Additional key events include a cultural tourism investment promotion.

May 18 features the World Tourism Alliance Member Day, bringing together experts and global representatives for discussions on tourism development.

Festivities continue with the bonfire dance at night, when visitors can embrace Tibetan traditions under the stars.

May 19, which is China Tourism Day, coincides with Namtso Lake's Opening Day in the region. It will celebrate the breathtaking beauty of the local Namtso Lake through a water-fetching ceremony, a cycling competition around it and other eco-themed events.

Guests can enjoy great performances, including the live drama Princess Wencheng by the Lhasa River.

The fun and frolics don't stop there. Throughout May, visitors can take in Tibetan opera, music concerts sports competitions and unique activities – such as the Sunlight Fairy Contest and Jiangsu-Lhasa Week – showcasing Tibetan heritage and traditions.
