Private enterprises have become the cornerstone of foreign trade growth in the Xizang autonomous region.

By the end of 2025, the region boasted 226 companies with import and export operations, a 12.4 percent year-on-year increase. Private firms led this expansion, recording a total import and export value of 7.26 billion yuan ($1.04 billion) and accounting for 85.7 percent share of the region's total.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Xizang's foreign trade volume saw a surge, and the region established trade relations with over 180 countries and regions. This period also saw the rapid rise of cross-border e-commerce and the establishment of key national platforms like the Lhasa Comprehensive Bonded Zone.

Looking ahead to the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), proposals during the recent Xizang's Two Sessions have focused on expanding Xizang's openness to the outside world. Key goals include strengthening its vital channel to South Asia and further supporting private enterprises in their global expansion.

To address challenges faced by small and medium-sized private enterprises, Li Ling, regional political adviser and president of Qomolangma Glacier Water, proposed that the regional Federation of Industry and Commerce establish a dedicated working group. This team would provide tailored services to qualified enterprises, ensuring their steady and sustained development in the international arena.
