During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Xizang autonomous region's total goods imports and exports reached 40.69 billion yuan ($5.88 billion), up 78.5 percent from the previous plan period, according to Lhasa Customs.
Foreign trade expanded at an average annual rate of 21 percent, showing steady growth alongside notable improvements in both quality and efficiency.
Xizang's foreign trade network has become increasingly diversified. All seven prefecture-level cities in the region are now engaged in foreign trade, with business links extending to 184 countries and regions worldwide.
In terms of trade structure, exports of the so-called "new trio" products — new energy vehicles, photovoltaic products and lithium batteries — saw strong growth. By 2025, their exports reached 358 million yuan, nearly 39 times the level in 2020.
Exports of Xizang's distinctive local specialty products also grew steadily, totaling more than 56 million yuan in 2025, up 16.7 percent from 2020, as more high-quality plateau products entered global markets.
Meanwhile, Xizang has accelerated the development of opening-up channels. A more integrated road-rail-air-postal transport network is taking shape, with a new land port, the region's first comprehensive bonded zone, an international land port and an international air cargo terminal now in operation. Three new international and regional air routes have also been added, providing strong support for high-quality foreign trade development.
