Xizang's foreign trade surges 15.4% in Jan-Feb

Xizang autonomous region's foreign trade maintained strong momentum in the first two months of 2026, with total imports and exports reaching 1.82 billion yuan ($264.93 million), up 15.4 percent year-on-year. Exports totaled 1.24 billion yuan, while imports stood at 578 million yuan.

Trade partnerships continued to diversify, with Nepal remaining Xizang's largest trading partner as bilateral trade rose 44.9 percent to 796 million yuan, accounting for 43.6 percent of the region's total. Hong Kong and South Africa also emerged as key partners, while trade with South Asian countries overall climbed 43 percent, reflecting deepening regional economic cooperation.

Private enterprises played a leading role, contributing 58.2 percent of total trade with 1.06 billion yuan. Foreign-invested companies also posted strong growth, accounting for 40 percent of the total.

All seven prefecture-level areas recorded foreign trade activity, with Lhasa and Shigatse acting as major growth engines. Lhasa alone contributed 70.5 percent of the total trade, while Shigatse accounted for 29 percent.

Border trade saw steady growth, while processing trade achieved breakthroughs. Consumer goods and cultural products also remained key export drivers as imports of consumer goods surged significantly.
