Markham county in Chamdo city, Xizang autonomous region, bursts into spring every March, with vineyards budding anew, promising a fruitful harvest. In a few months, ripe grapes will be transformed into fine wine, ready to reach global markets.
Located at the crossroads of Sichuan province, Yunnan province, and Xizang, Markham county has a rich viticultural history dating back to the mid-18th century. In 2011, resident Losang Tsering collaborated with experts from Northwest A&F University to launch the Dameiyong wine brand, marking Xizang's entry into the commercial wine market.
In March 2026, at the ProWein trade fair in Duesseldorf, Germany, Choitso, general manager of Zangdong Treasures Wine Company, showcased Dameiyong wine, earning international acclaim.
Choitso, who returned to her hometown in 2014, spearheaded a model that combined enterprises, associations, bases, and farmers, encouraging the cultivation of over 66 hectares of wine grapes, which has doubled local farmers' incomes through guaranteed purchase agreements and technical support.
"The recognition of Markham's produce at a top-tier global wine event fills me with pride," Choitso said. "There's still much to do to bring our wines to the world, including improving grape cultivation techniques and perfecting our brewing craft."
Markham county is actively pursuing the establishment of a national modern agricultural park and grape industry cluster, supporting vineyard development, winery upgrades, and technological advancement.
With over 210 hectares of vineyards and six leading wineries, the county's wine production reached 2,180 metric tons in 2025, valued at 131 million yuan ($18.97 million).
